2026 WCQ: Jordel Dossou reveals how Benin Republic outclass Nigeria

By Wale Mustapha

Benin Republic midfielder, Jodel Dossou, has disclosed how the Squirrels outsmarted Nigeria’s Super Eagles in their 2-1 victory in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on Monday night.

Dossou equalized for Benin Republic after Raphael Onyedika had opened the scoring for the Super Eagles. The FC Sochaux player capitalized on a miscommunication between Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey to slot the ball past Stanley Nwabali.

The 32-year-old Dossou revealed that the team had to tweak their strategy to outwit the Nigerian defense.

“This style of play was worked on in training. We know that Steve Mounié wins almost all duels,” Dossou said as per 24haubenin.

“Well before the goal action, Steve called me and told me that since Ajayi (Nigeria player) is on me all the time, I’ll have to change my strategy.

“On the first occasion, he let the ball pass, and unfortunately, I missed it. For the second time, I hid behind the defender, and as soon as Steve let the ball go, I appeared and stole the ball from him to equalize.”
