Former Nigeria coach Adegboye Onigbinde remains optimistic about the national team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their unconvincing start.
The Super Eagles have struggled, failing to secure a win in four matches and currently sitting in fifth position with just three points.
Onigbinde believes that qualification is still within reach, contingent on the team’s prioritization and effort moving forward. He expressed his disappointment over the recent 2-1 loss to Benin, a match that could have significantly improved Nigeria’s chances in the group.
“It is still very possible for the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Everything now depends on how we work our way out of this tight corner,” Onigbinde stated.
“But then, I can’t still believe that we lost to Benin 2-1. It’s a game we should have won to brighten our chances in the group. Notwithstanding, I am still very optimistic that Nigeria will qualify for the 2026 World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has been facing intense scrutiny from Nigerians on social media regarding his player selections and tactical decisions, which have not yielded positive results in recent games.
