NWFL: Confluence Queens coach fumes as disallowed goal costs win vs Abia Angels

By Wale Mustapha

Confluence Queens coach Abubakar Musa insisted his team were denied victory after a goal was controversially ruled offside in Wednesday’s 2–2 draw with Abia Angels in the season opener of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) in Iyamho.

The Lokoja-based side went behind early when Funmilayo Adefuye put Abia Angels ahead in the 19th minute, before Akosile Mary equalized in first-half stoppage time.

Confluence Queens then took the lead six minutes into the second half through Blessing Sunday, only for Blessing Okon to restore parity for the visitors in the 64th minute.

The controversy arose when Emmanuel Seeber’s strike, which would have given Queens a crucial advantage, was disallowed for offside—a decision Musa described as “baffling.”

“It’s not a fair result for us. We should have won with that goal, how it was ruled offside is still baffling,” Musa said after the match.

He urged match officials to exercise greater caution in future games but refused to let the decision overshadow his players’ performance.

“It’s too early to complain about referee calls, but I don’t think it’s a good way to start with such questionable decisions. They (match officials) will need to do better going forward,” he added.

Musa, however, praised his team’s resilience and fightback.

“I’m happy with how we approached the game. Yes, we didn’t start well, but the response was fantastic. I’m proud of the girls for stepping up, and that response will help us succeed this season,” he concluded.

Both teams now share one point each as the NWFL season gets underway.
