Femi Azeez Formalizes Nigeria Switch, Begins Passport Application Before AFCON Qualifiers

Millwall forward Femi Azeez has commenced the process of obtaining a Nigerian passport ahead of the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September, as he moves closer to committing his international future to Nigeria.

Born in London, Azeez is eligible to represent the Super Eagles through his Nigerian father, while also qualifying for England by birth and Spain through his mother.

The 24-year-old was one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the recent Unity Cup in London. In terms of goal involvements, the former Reading winger finished as the joint-most productive player in the tournament for the Super Eagles, recording three goal contributions alongside experienced striker Terem Moffi.

Azeez is understood to be leaning towards representing Nigeria at senior international level and has now begun the necessary documentation process to secure a Nigerian passport ahead of a possible competitive appearance later this year.

Should he feature in Nigeria’s opening Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches in September, the appearance would cap-tie him to the three-time African champions, effectively ending any possibility of switching allegiance to either England or Spain in the future.

The winger was initially considered for Nigeria’s June international friendlies against Poland and Portugal. However, the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that Millwall FC declined to release the player after he was not included in the original squad list.

With the passport process now underway, Azeez appears to be taking another significant step towards a long-term future with the Super Eagles.
