Wilfred Ndidi: Portugal Clash a Major Test of Super Eagles’ Progress Under Chelle

Nigeria captain Wilfred Ndidi has described Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal as a significant benchmark in the team’s development, insisting the encounter will provide a valuable measure of the progress made under head coach Eric Chelle.
Nigeria face the UEFA giants at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria on Wednesday night in their final fixture of the June international window, with both sides looking to build momentum ahead of future competitive assignments.
The Super Eagles head into the match in encouraging form following victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica, as well as a hard-earned draw against Poland, while Portugal are using the fixture as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the showdown, Ndidi acknowledged the quality of the Portuguese side but stressed that the game represents an important opportunity for Nigeria to test themselves against one of the world’s elite teams.
“It will be a very good test for us. We faced the first test against Poland, and Portugal is a great team with great players as well,” Ndidi said.
“It will be a massive test for us as a group, to our vision, to our aim as a team, to our growth.”
The Leicester City midfielder emphasised that the Super Eagles remain focused on their own development and philosophy rather than the reputation of their opponents.
“This is football. We learn when we win, draw or lose. There is so much confidence in the team and in our philosophy. We believe in ourselves.
“We do not care who we are playing, even if it is one of the biggest countries in world football. The most important thing is us as a team.
“We are looking forward to taking our philosophy and strategy into the game.”
The fixture offers another important examination for Chelle, whose tenure has generated optimism among supporters following a series of positive performances and results.
Although Nigeria will be without key attacking stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, as well as Unity Cup standout Femi Azeez, the squad still boasts experienced internationals including Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze and Ndidi.
Portugal, meanwhile, are expected to field a formidable squad featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha and Nuno Mendes.
Beyond the immediate result, the encounter provides Nigeria with an opportunity to gauge their progress against one of Europe’s leading nations and potentially avenge their only previous meeting with Portugal, a 4-0 defeat in Lisbon in November 2022.
A strong showing in Leiria would further reinforce confidence within the Super Eagles camp as attention gradually shifts towards upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and other international commitments.
