Asian Champions League Elite draw date confirmed for 2026-27 as AFC unveils next chapter

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has confirmed the date for the draw of the 2026-27 Asian Champions League Elite – the 45th edition of the continent’s premier club competition – as anticipation grows over the tournament’s revamped format.

The Elite version of the AFC Champions League has been reshaped to bring together the strongest clubs from across Asia in a single, top-tier competition, pitting giants from East and West Asia against each other more frequently and at later stages than before.

The AFC’s announcement comes on the back of a landmark campaign in 2025-26 (the 55th season under the AFC club competition umbrella), when Saudi side Al Ahli Jeddah wrote a new chapter in their history by securing their second Asian crown in the modern era of the tournament.

Al Ahli’s triumph has intensified focus on the forthcoming 2026-27 edition, with clubs and supporters now turning their attention to the draw that will shape the next race for continental supremacy.

Historic season sets stage for new draw

Al Ahli Jeddah’s success in the 2025-26 Elite campaign has been highlighted by the AFC as a pivotal moment in the competition’s evolution.

The Saudi club, long regarded as one of the region’s heavyweights, “wrote history” in that 55th edition by clinching their second Asian title since the Champions League moved to its current modern structure.

Their win underlined the growing strength of clubs from the Saudi Pro League at continental level and set a benchmark for rivals across Asia ahead of the next Elite season.

The 2026-27 draw – now officially scheduled by the AFC – is expected to attract extensive regional and international interest, with top clubs from Japan, South Korea, Australia, Iran, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and beyond set to learn their group-stage and knockout paths.

New Elite format fuels East–West rivalry

The introduction of the Asian Champions League Elite format has already transformed the look and feel of the competition.

The reshaped structure has been designed to create more “blockbuster” fixtures between leading clubs from East Asia and West Asia, with traditional geographic separation reduced in the latter stages.

The AFC says the new layout has “ignited” the contest by significantly increasing high-stakes cross-regional meetings, which in turn has boosted television audiences, stadium attendances and commercial interest.

With the draw date now locked in for the 2026-27 season, coaches and analysts across the continent are preparing for potential clashes that could see some of Asia’s biggest stars and most storied clubs collide earlier and more often than in previous formats.

What fans need to know about 2026-27

The AFC’s confirmation of the draw schedule is the first formal step in the rollout of the 2026-27 Asian Champions League Elite.

Further details – including the exact seeding pots, confirmed participants from domestic leagues, and the full match calendar – are expected to be released by the AFC in the build-up to the draw.

Supporters will be watching closely to see whether Al Ahli Jeddah can defend their title under the evolving format, and whether challengers from East Asia, Central Asia and the Gulf can disrupt Saudi dominance in the Elite era.

The 2026-27 edition, the 45th under the Asian Champions League banner, is being positioned by the AFC as a continuation of the competition’s “new look”, with a focus on competitive balance, cross-continental rivalry and heightened drama from the group phase through to the final.

As Asia’s leading clubs await the outcome of the draw, the stage is being set for another intensely contested season in a tournament that has rapidly become one of the most high-profile club competitions outside Europe.
