France’s Konate says World Cup exit ‘less painful’ than 2022 final but admits Spain were ‘clearly better’

France defender Ibrahima Konate has delivered a starkly honest assessment of his country’s World Cup 2026 semi-final defeat, conceding that Spain were “clearly better” as they ended Les Bleus’ dreams of a third world title.

Spain beat France 2-0 in the last four, knocking out Didier Deschamps’ side in what many in France saw as a shock, given they entered the tournament as overwhelming favourites for the trophy.

The loss at the penultimate hurdle, just four years after France were beaten on penalties by Argentina in the 2022 final, has cast a long shadow over the runners-up from Qatar – and over a squad widely regarded as one of the deepest in world football.

‘We think about it every day’

Speaking on Friday, on the eve of France’s third-place play-off against England, Konate did not hide the emotional impact of the defeat, even as he tried to put it in perspective.

The Real Madrid defender, who only joined the Spanish giants a few weeks before the tournament, admitted that France had been living under the weight of huge expectations from the start.

Spain’s ‘total dominance’ and a third straight defeat

Konate, who did not start for France during this World Cup and spent the competition largely on the bench, was particularly candid about Spain’s superiority – and about a trend that is becoming worrying for Les Bleus.

He pointed out that the 2-0 defeat in the semi-final was Spain’s third consecutive victory over France on a major stage.

Konate went further in his analysis of the latest meeting, making clear that France had been second best in several key departments.

Spain, the reigning European champions, controlled large parts of the semi-final, showcasing the fluid attacking play and high pressing that have defined their resurgence, with young wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams again central to their success.

‘We were never guaranteed the World Cup’

France arrived at the 2026 tournament with arguably the deepest pool of talent in international football, leading many fans and pundits to label them clear favourites to lift the trophy.

Konate, however, suggested that this view ignored the realities of tournament football.

His comments amount to a reality check for a nation used to going deep in major tournaments under Deschamps, and which had begun to see a third World Cup star as an inevitable milestone rather than an objective to be earned.

As France prepare to face England in the play-off, Konate’s message combines disappointment with defiance: the team must learn why their plan failed, accept Spain’s superiority on the night – and rebuild for the next challenge, knowing, as he put it, that their story is “certainly not over”.
