Eric Garcia brings World Cup glow to Barcelona training as Flick greets returning hero

Barcelona’s training session on Thursday was lit up by a surprise appearance from newly crowned World Cup winner Eric Garcia, who dropped into the Joan Gamper Sports City complex to greet his club team-mates before starting his holidays.

The Catalan centre-back, part of Spain’s triumphant squad at the 2026 World Cup, visited the club’s training base in Sant Joan Despi as Barca continue preparations for the new season, which begins in August.

Garcia, who made his World Cup debut in the dying minutes of the final against Argentina, is one of eight Barcelona players to have lifted the trophy with La Roja.

Warm welcome for world champion

Garcia’s arrival was the standout moment of the session, with the 23-year-old defender receiving a stream of congratulations from staff and players on the pitch.

He was embraced by team-mates and coaching staff, and personally congratulated by new German head coach Hansi Flick, who is overseeing pre-season work with a reduced first-team group.

Among those to greet Garcia were Gerard Martin, Marc Casado, Hector Fort and teenage forward Roony Bardghji, as Barcelona’s younger generation took the chance to share the moment with the club’s latest world champion.

The atmosphere at the Sant Joan Despi training ground was described as relaxed and friendly as players and staff posed for photos and exchanged hugs with the defender.

Flick turns to youth amid international absences

While Garcia’s visit provided the emotional highlight, the session itself underlined the current reality for Barcelona’s pre-season work under Flick.

With a large number of senior players still away on international duty or on post-tournament breaks, the German coach again called up several footballers from Barcelona Atletic and the club’s Juvenil A (Under-19) side to make up the numbers in training.

Garcia’s brief stopover at the training ground, before heading off on his post-World Cup break, served as a symbolic link between Spain’s global triumph and Barcelona’s ambitions for the coming campaign.

The defender, who has previously been on the fringes of the first team and has spent time away from the club on loan, returns to Catalonia with enhanced status as a world champion.

His success with Spain adds to Barcelona’s long tradition of supplying key players to victorious international sides, and the fact that eight members of the World Cup-winning squad are drawn from the club underlines its continuing influence at the highest level.

Barcelona will step up their preparations in the coming weeks as more international players rejoin the squad, but for one day at least, the World Cup took centre stage at Sant Joan Despi – embodied in the figure of Eric Garcia, the latest Barca player to reach football’s summit.
