Frenkie de Jong given fresh Barcelona chance after El Clasico return

Frenkie de Jong has been handed a new opportunity to re-establish himself at Barcelona after returning from a serious knee injury in Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.

The 29-year-old Netherlands international came on for Fermin Lopez and played 16 minutes, operating in an attacking midfield role that is unfamiliar to him. Despite being deployed outside his usual position, he impressed after recovering from a torn ligament suffered during the 2026 World Cup.

De Jong sustained the injury to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee while playing for the Netherlands. Hansi Flick included him in the squad for La Liga’s match against Real Betis and the UEFA Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain, but he remained an unused substitute in both games.

His return against Real Madrid represented his first competitive appearance since the injury. Flick said De Jong’s contribution, although limited, was significant for the team.

“He trained very well and gives us a great deal of strength with the ball,” Flick said. “It was extremely important for us that he played a few minutes.”

De Jong has made clear that he does not intend to accept a prolonged spell on the bench. Speaking to Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport, the former Ajax midfielder said he was determined to increase his involvement as his fitness continued to improve.

“I have never previously stayed on the bench for such a long period, and I hope I do not have to this season,” he said. “I am now fully fit and getting stronger every day. I hope to get more minutes soon.”

He added: “I understand that my return has to be gradual, but my long-term goal is to play regularly and return to the starting line-up as soon as possible.”

The competition for places in the two deeper midfield positions is intense. Flick currently relies on Pedri and Rodri in the double-pivot, while Gavi and Marc Bernal are also competing for those roles.

However, De Jong’s performance in the Clasico has raised the possibility of a different route into the side. The attacking midfield position currently occupied by Fermin Lopez has become less secure following Dani Olmo’s injury, creating a potential opening for the Dutchman.

That gives De Jong another way to earn regular playing time while he continues his comeback. His Clasico appearance showed he can contribute in a new role, even though his preferred position remains further back in midfield.

Barcelona are listed for a La Liga fixture on 31 October 2026. The schedule also lists Deportivo Alaves and Racing Santander in La Liga, with Real Madrid shown for 01 November 2026.
