Olympic Eagles begin preparations for 2027 U-23 AFCON qualifier against DR Congo

Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles have begun their preparations for the second-round 2027 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifying tie against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Head coach Eric Chelle oversaw the team’s first training session on Tuesday at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, where 28 players took part.
The session marked the start of Nigeria’s build-up to a two-legged tie that will determine whether they remain in contention for a place at the 2027 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.
The squad was not yet complete, however, with Rangers International trio Chimobi Igwilo, Kenneth Igboke and Chibueze Oputa joining the camp later in the day.
The three players had been involved in the Flying Antelopes’ CAF Champions League second preliminary round second-leg match against MC Alger of Algeria.
They are expected to link up with the rest of the squad during Wednesday’s training programme, which will consist of morning and evening sessions.
With the Rangers International players due to join the group, the Olympic Eagles are expected to increase the intensity of their preparations before the first leg against DR Congo.
The Congolese side will host the opening match at the TP Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi on Friday, November 13, 2026.
Nigeria will then stage the return fixture at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne on Tuesday, November 17.
The winner over the two legs will advance to the final qualifying round, where they will face either Sierra Leone or Burkina Faso for a place at the 2027 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.
