Former England winger Karen Carney warns Lionesses about Asisat Oshoala’s threat

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Sports journalist and former English winger, Karen Carney has warned the current set of England women’s national team to be wary of the threats Nigeria can bring to the table when both sides meet in Brisbane on Monday.

In the clash between former colonial master (England) and former colony (Nigeria), the two teams will face off for the second time in the FIFA Women’s World Cup with a stake for a place in the quarter-final.

With a goal in three group games for the Super Falcons, Carney is of the view that FC Barcelona forward, Asisat Oshoal can be one of the greatest threats on the Lionesses’ path of making it to the last eight.

Oshoala came off the bench to score the most important third goal as Randy Waldrum’s side secured a 3-2 win over co-host, Australia, a feat Carney says her compatriots must beware of.

“She is a top-quality striker who is more than capable of pulling something out of the bag,” Carney said in an interview with Powerleague.

“I expect Nigeria will have big expectations and big hopes, so we can’t rest on our laurels. Despite how good England were against China, Nigeria are a top nation that will cause us problems. They have a world-class striker and individual players that will be difficult for us.”

The European champions won the only head-to-head meeting between both sides 3-2 in the group stage of the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

With a six-match unbeaten run, the Super Falcons will hope to inflict only the second loss on England under Sarin Wiegman whose only loss came against Australia during an international friendly match. The team has an 80% win ratio under Wiegman with 28 wins, six draws, and a loss in 35 games.
