Victor Osimhen: Nigeria striker grabs brace in Napoli’s comeback win at Frosinone
By Wale Mustapha
Victor Osimhen and Napoli picked it where they left it in their first match of new Serie A campaign as they recorded a 3-1 comeback win against new promoted Frosinone on Saturday.
The Super Eagles’ forward ensured that the defending champions under new manager, Rudi Garcia are still a team to beat in the Lega Calcio scoring two goals in the encounter they needed to make response.
Napoli were aiming to become only the third different side this century to defend the Serie A title but that suffered a false start as they conceded early following an overzealous foul committed by Jens Cajuste.
Abdou Harroui coolly stepped up, and using his vital Serie A experience in a team of league debutants, sent Alex Meret the wrong way to stun the champions.
Napoli showed they are truly a comeback kings as they responded with an equalizer through Mateo Politano’s thunderous effort.
It became all Napoli’s show from then on as they dominated the proceedings with series of attacks.
Osimhen who scored 26 goals for the champions last season started the season with another bang as he fired a blistering first-time effort into the roof of the net after a strong run from Giovanni Di Lorenzo down the right to give his side the lead before half time.
Albeit in the second tier, Stadio Benito Stirpe was a fortress last season, with the Canaries losing only twice in front of the home fans in the entire campaign.
Frosinone went close to restore parity at the restart but saw their effort denied by woodwork.
Osimhen then showed how it’s done, clinching his second strike of the evening after beating the offside trip and rolling past Stefano Turati in a one-on-one he was never going to lose.
Despite missing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia through injury, Napoli looked as potent as ever, leaving Frosinone under no illusions as to what it will take to avoid an immediate Serie B return at the third time of asking.
