Sports Minister John Enoh assures of improved facilities after MKO Abiola inspection

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Newly appointed Sports Minister, John Enoh took a long walk through the Moshood Abiola Stadium to inspect facilities on Thursday.
Senator Enoh began with the field inspection, then moved to the meeting rooms and the changing rooms for the athletes as all he wants is to see the current state of the facilities.
When the sports minister and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry got to the 200-room hostel facilities, the former couldn’t hold his displeasure anymore.
“From 2003 till today, the facilities have gone through a lot and have suffered a lot,” Enoch posited while speaking with pressmen after the inspection.
“When you get to the powerhouse you find out that out of about eight generating sets, nearly all of them are functional. The Permanent Secretary has also been quite helpful. It is just a little bit of cheering news but I just don’t want to ignore it.
“Immediately after that, I had to go to the athletes’ hostel. The initial conception of this place and facility was that the game village was supposed to be part of this facility, but immediately after those games, the Federal Government sold out those buildings, and proceeds of that sale were supposed to be used to build an athletes hostel. It is a bit unacceptable that after several years, we can still find that facility in the kind of sorry state that we found it.”
The Minister says it would not be business as usual as he is ready to do all that he can to bring in innovation, the appropriate funds, and the development necessary to change the current state of sports for the better, while calling all hands to come on deck to change and take sports in Nigeria to the next level.
“It is because of the vision he [Nigeria’s President] had for this Ministry and he looked around and saw me and he believed that I have the passion and commitment as a serious-minded person to make a contribution and to grow sports ministry in Nigeria. I think we are already moving on,” he concluded.
