2023/24 NPFL MD6 Wrap: Remo win battle of Stars in Ikenne to go top of the table

Remo Stars returned to the top of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table after a comprehensive 3-0 win over Shooting Stars Sports Club in Matchday six game in Ikenne on Wednesday.

Ahmed Akinyele opened the scoring for the host in the 20th minute as a brace from Sikiru Alimi, the first from the penalty spot lifted the Sky Blue Stars to another three points and the first clean sheets of the season.

In a similar vein, Kano Pillars recorded a 3-0 win against Bayelsa United.

Mubarak Sani, Rabiu Ali, and Abba Adam scored for the Sai Masi Gida to silence their visitors.

Kufre Ebong’s 35th-minute goal inspired Akwa United to a 1-0 triumph over Gombe United which ensured that the Uyo-based side climbed out of the relegation zone.

In Umuahia, Rivers United forced Heartland FC to a 1-1 draw as Farouk Mohammed’s goal canceled Onyekachi Okafor’s opener.

Kwara United had to rely on Ifeanyi Egwim’s 86th-minute goal to secure a 2-1 win over Sporting Lagos in Ilorin.

Jonathan Alukwu had opened the scoring for the visitors before Isaiah Ejeh’s penalty evened the scoreline in the additional minutes of the first half.

In Jos, Christopher Nwaeze’s 70th-minute goal was enough to hand ten-man Plateau United a 1-0 victory against Katsina United.

Sunshine Stars in Akure edged ten-man Abia Warriors 2-1 while Niger Tornadoes and Enyimba settled for a 0-9 draw.

Overall, Remo Stars moved to the top of the log with 12 points, two points ahead of Enugu Rangers and Shooting Stars respectively.

Kano Pillars, Gombe United, Plateau United, and Abia Warriors follow with nine points.

Lobi Stars, Sporting Lagos, and Rivers United with eight points complete the top half teams.

At the other end of the table, Heartland FC, Doma United, and Bayelsa United sit in the relegation zone with Enyimba having about three outstanding games.
