Hibernian Coach Lennon Backs Ambrose To Make Super Eagles World Cup Squad
Hibernian manager Neil Lennon has expressed optimism that Efe Ambrose’s stellar performances for the Scottish club could pave the way for a return to the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming World Cup finals in Russia. The 28-year-old Nigerian defender, who previously played for Celtic, has experienced a remarkable resurgence under Lennon’s guidance.
Lennon, who brought Ambrose to Celtic from Israeli club Ashdod and later secured him on loan to aid Hibs’ pursuit of the Championship title, successfully persuaded the defender to commit to a two-year deal with the club this summer. Reflecting on Ambrose’s turnaround, Lennon highlighted the potential for increased interest from other clubs and dismissed any notion of the player being a failure during his time at Celtic.
“It wouldn’t surprise me,” Lennon asserted in an interview with Edinburgh News. “If he keeps playing the way he has been, his stock will rise. This is a player who has played in the Champions League, won the Africa Cup of Nations, and participated in the World Cup, showcasing a massive pedigree.”
Lennon praised Ambrose’s consistency during his tenure at Celtic, emphasizing his excellence over three seasons. He described Ambrose as a superb athlete and consummate professional, highlighting the player’s resilience and character in handling the challenges of elite football.
With Nigeria having qualified for the World Cup, Lennon acknowledged Ambrose’s aspirations to secure a spot in the national squad. “He is more than capable of doing that with the form he is showing,” Lennon remarked. “He is still a big man there, with 50 odd caps, and he is at his peak.”
