Usman Mohammed Sees a ‘New Beginning’ with Norwegian Club Sarpsborg 08

Former U-23 Eagles midfielder, Usman Mohammed, is set to embark on a new chapter in his football career after securing a three-year contract with Norwegian club Sarpsborg 08. Mohammed’s career faced a setback when he declined to play for Portuguese club Nacional de Madeira last season due to a payment dispute. Following a ruling by FIFA in response to a petition from his agent, Mohammed was released from Madeira and given the opportunity to pursue a fresh start.

After unsuccessful trials with Barcelona Team B, the former FC Taraba captain underwent training with Sarpsborg, ultimately impressing the coaching staff and earning a contract with the club.

In an exclusive interview with Completesportsnigeria.com, Mohammed expressed his relief at putting the challenges behind him: “It’s a new beginning for me, and I thank God all the troubles are over now. I was not happy with the situation as I have not been able to play competitive football since the last Olympics in Rio, Brazil, but the situation is normal now. I will be unveiled by the club on Sunday and look forward to joining my teammates for the pre-season in January.”

Sarpsborg, which finished in third place in the recently concluded Norwegian League season, is gearing up for the Norway Cup final against Lillestrom on Saturday. The upcoming Norwegian League season is slated to commence in February 2023.

Mohammed, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s U-23 Africa Cup of Nations victory in 2015 and contributed to the country’s bronze medal at the Rio Olympics, is eager to resume competitive football and make his mark with Sarpsborg 08.
