AFCONQ: “He was unlucky” — Victor Osimhen backs Victor Boniface to find the net

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen has come to the defense of his teammate Victor Boniface, who faced criticism following the Super Eagles’ 3-0 victory over Benin Republic on Saturday.

Boniface, the Bayer Leverkusen star, started in place of Osimhen but was unable to score or contribute to the goals. He was substituted in the 72nd minute for Osimhen, who scored within six minutes of his introduction.

Despite the criticism from fans and pundits, Osimhen highlighted the importance of team unity and the reality of scoring opportunities for strikers.

“Boniface has been like a brother to me, just as Awoniyi is,” Osimhen said on the Counter Attack Podcast. “One thing I really appreciate about our team is the unity and solidarity, regardless of who is starting or who is on the bench. We all share the same mindset and goal—to win every game and support each other.”

He continued, “Boniface had a solid performance, but he was unlucky with some attempts, which is normal for strikers. We all miss chances, and it’s part of the game. He played well and is a key player who can win games for us individually. It was important for me to come in and contribute as well.”

Osimhen’s remarks underscore the supportive nature of the team and the collective focus on achieving success together.
