Aissa Mandi: Algeria’s record appearance holder retires from international football

Algeria defender Aissa Mandi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing to an end a record-breaking career of more than a decade with the Desert Warriors.

The 34-year-old revealed his decision in a video posted on his official Instagram account, saying it was the right moment to draw a line under his time with the national team after giving “everything” for his country.

“Playing for the Algeria national team was something exceptional and beautiful, and it gave me unforgettable feelings,” Mandi said.

“But I feel that the right moment has come to say goodbye, after I have given everything I can for my country.”

Record-breaker bows out

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) quickly paid tribute to the Villarreal defender, underlining his status in the national team’s history.

The federation highlighted Mandi’s record as “the player with the most appearances in the shirt of the Desert Warriors”, a benchmark that underlines his importance across several generations of the side.

Since making his debut on 5 March 2014 in a 2-0 friendly win over Slovenia, Mandi went on to become a mainstay of the back line. Over 10 years, he amassed 122 caps and scored eight goals, the highest number of appearances ever recorded by an Algeria international.

His consistency and leadership made him one of the pillars of the team through multiple coaches, tournaments and qualification campaigns.

Mandi’s decision comes in the wake of Algeria’s participation in the 2026 World Cup, where he featured in what turned out to be his final major tournament for the national side.
