Emmanuel Michael: LASK loan Nigeria youth left-back to Admira Wacker for 2026-27 season

Austrian champions LASK have sent Nigerian youth international Emmanuel Michael on a season-long loan to second-tier side Admira Wacker, in a move designed to fast-track the 20-year-old’s development with regular first-team football.

LASK confirmed the deal in a statement on their official website, announcing that Michael will spend the entire 2026-27 campaign with the Maria Enzersdorf-based club.

The transfer could have consequences for another Nigerian defender, Victor Ehibe, who had been on trial at Admira Wacker as the club searched the market for a new left-back.

Loan move to boost playing time

Michael, a left-back, joined LASK in January 2025 and has since made 15 appearances for the Linz outfit, five of those coming for their reserve team, LASK Amateure OO.

With competition for places intense at the Bundesliga champions, LASK and the player have opted for a temporary switch to the Austrian 2. Liga, where he is expected to feature more regularly.

The club made clear in their announcement that the loan is aimed at ensuring Michael gains consistent minutes at senior level across the 2026-27 season.

Admira Wacker, who have been rebuilding their squad in a bid to challenge for promotion, identified left-back as a priority position and moved to secure Michael’s services ahead of the new campaign.

Uncertain future for fellow Nigerian trialist

Before finalising the agreement for Michael, Admira Wacker had invited fellow Nigerian defender Victor Ehibe for a trial as they assessed options at left-back.

However, following the arrival of Michael on loan from LASK, it is now unclear whether Admira Wacker will proceed to offer Ehibe a permanent contract.

The club has not yet made an official statement on Ehibe’s status, leaving his future at the club unresolved.

Rising Nigerian talent

Michael is regarded as one of the promising young defenders to emerge from Nigeria in recent years.

He was a key figure for Nigeria at the 2023 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, playing in all four of the Golden Eaglets’ matches at the tournament and earning attention for his composure and delivery from the left flank.

A graduate of Simoiben Football Academy, Michael previously turned out for Nigerian Premier League side Gombe United before securing his move to Europe with LASK.

The step to Admira Wacker represents his first loan spell away from Linz and will be closely watched by both LASK and Nigeria’s youth set-up as he continues his progression in Austrian football.
