FCT NUJ honours CG Adewale Adeniyi
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has honoured the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Dr Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, with a special recognition for his contribution to media partnership and development.
The recognition was presented during the closing ceremony of the 2026 NUJ FCT Football Tournament at the Area 3 Football Pitch in Abuja on Saturday.
Adeniyi was represented at the ceremony by the Deputy Comptroller-General and Head of Sports of the Nigeria Customs Service, Samuel Onikeku, who received the award on behalf of the Customs boss.
The honour formed part of the closing activities of the one-week tournament, which brought together teams from government agencies, security organisations, professional bodies and the media.
The Nigeria Customs Service provided another major highlight of the ceremony after its football team defeated the National Institute for Sports (NIS) 3-0 to win the championship.
Customs captain Mikail Abubakar opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the tournament, while Familola Fatai doubled the advantage in the second half before Femi Omodara completed the scoring.
The victory completed an unbeaten campaign for Customs, who won all five matches they played during the competition.
Abubakar’s impressive tournament earned him both the Golden Boot and Most Valuable Player awards, while his Customs teammate Charles Ahur was named Best Goalkeeper.
Ahur played a key role in Customs’ progress to the final, including saving two penalties during the semi-final against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), before keeping a clean sheet against NIS.
The Nigeria Air Force, champions of the 2025 edition, secured third place after defeating last year’s runners-up NDLEA 2-0, while the NUJ FCT Council team received the Fair Play Award.
Chairman of the tournament’s organising committee, Comrade Ndubueze Chidoka, commended the participating teams and partners for contributing to the success of the competition.
Chidoka described Customs as deserving champions after their five-match unbeaten run and also highlighted the participation of NTA and NIS, which featured in the tournament for the first time.
NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, represented by Vice Chairman Comrade Yahaya Ndambabo, also commended the teams for maintaining sportsmanship throughout the competition.
The tournament was designed not only as a sporting competition but also as a platform for strengthening relationships among journalists, government institutions, security agencies, professional bodies and other stakeholders.
Other institutions represented in the competition included the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Air Force, NDLEA, Nigerian Television Authority and the FCT Football Coaches Association.
The recognition of Adeniyi, alongside the award presented to the Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, underscored the NUJ FCT Council’s effort to acknowledge stakeholders supporting sports and institutional development.
