Flying Eagles Back in Abuja as CAF Decision Hangs Over 2027 U-20 AFCON Qualification
Nigeria’s U-20 men’s national football team, the Flying Eagles, arrived back in Abuja on Tuesday night following the conclusion of their 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship campaign in Côte d’Ivoire.
The seven-time African champions touched down at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport around 7:00 p.m. aboard an Air Côte d’Ivoire flight, just days after a painful 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in Sunday’s final at Yamoussoukro. The loss denied Nigeria a third consecutive regional title, having previously lifted the trophy in 2022 and 2024.
Despite the setback, the Flying Eagles’ hopes of playing in the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations remain alive, pending a crucial ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The Ghana Qualification Dilemma
Under standard tournament rules, WAFU B receives two qualifying slots for the U-20 AFCON, which traditionally go to the top two finalists—in this case, champions Burkina Faso and runners-up Nigeria. However, CAF recently awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 continental showpiece to Ghana, granting the Black Satellites automatic qualification as hosts.
Because Ghana competed in the WAFU B qualifiers, their host status has created ambiguity around the allocation of regional tickets. Nigerian football officials are hopeful that CAF will grant WAFU B an extra slot to account for Ghana, allowing Nigeria as the runners-up to join Burkina Faso at the tournament.
Nigeria’s optimism is partially bolstered by precedent: CAF expanded the field for the 2025 U-20 AFCON in Egypt to 13 teams instead of the traditional 12. However, it remains uncertain whether CAF will adopt a similar structure for 2027 or stick strictly to the current allocation rules.
Until CAF issues an official declaration, Burkina Faso remains the only WAFU B country with a guaranteed spot via qualification, leaving Nigeria in a tense waiting game.
