Fulham target third Real Madrid academy player as Alvaro Arbeloa reunion beckons

Fulham are exploring a move for promising Real Madrid midfielder Thiago Pitarch, in a deal that would see manager Alvaro Arbeloa target a third player he helped develop at the club’s Valdebebas academy.

The London club are already working on the possibility of signing the young midfielder, according to Spanish newspaper MARCA. However, discussions are progressing more slowly than the two previous deals because Pitarch is currently recovering from a knee injury.

Fulham are also considering other options to strengthen their midfield and are under no pressure to complete a deal immediately.

The interest in Pitarch follows Fulham’s agreement to sign Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios from Real Madrid’s academy. The joint transfer was worth €50m for 70% of the players’ rights, underlining Arbeloa’s belief in the ability of young footballers developed at Valdebebas to compete in the Premier League.

Pitarch made significant progress under Arbeloa while the former Real Madrid defender was coaching the club’s youth team. His development earned him promotion to the first-team squad last season, where his appearances highlighted the considerable potential that had already made him one of the most highly regarded prospects at the Spanish club.

Despite that progress, competition for places in Real Madrid’s midfield could restrict Pitarch’s opportunities to play regularly. A move to Fulham would therefore offer an attractive alternative, particularly because the player is understood to be open to working with Arbeloa again.

The relationship between the midfielder and his former coach is described as excellent, while Fulham believe the Premier League could provide Pitarch with the right environment to gain experience and continue refining his game.

A manager who knows the player’s strengths and weaknesses in detail would also be central to Fulham’s thinking. The club regard English football as one of the strongest competitions in the world and believe it could help Pitarch make further progress as he adapts to senior football.

No agreement has been reached and Fulham’s interest remains at an early stage. Nevertheless, the approach reflects the recruitment strategy Arbeloa has followed since taking charge at Craven Cottage.

That strategy is based on investing in young players whose development he monitored closely during his time at Real Madrid’s academy. Pitarch would become the latest example of a player linked with Fulham through Arbeloa’s familiarity with the club’s youth system, following the moves for Garcia and Palacios.

For now, the midfielder’s knee recovery and Fulham’s assessment of alternative midfield targets mean the situation is developing gradually. But the London club’s interest confirms that Arbeloa continues to look towards the next generation of Real Madrid talent as he builds his team.
