Ipswich close in on £8.5m deal for Fulham defender Issa Diop

Ipswich Town are poised to sign Morocco international defender Issa Diop from Fulham in a deal worth about £8.5m, as the newly promoted club steps up its preparations for life back in the Premier League.

The Suffolk side have reached a full agreement with Fulham over the 29-year-old centre-back, according to UK broadcaster Sky Sports, with only final formalities understood to be outstanding.

Diop is expected to complete his move in the coming days, with a four-year contract lined up once he has passed a medical. The transfer is designed to strengthen Ipswich’s back line ahead of their first top-flight campaign since promotion.

Four-year deal lined up

Club officials at Ipswich, who have been highly active in the summer market, see Diop as a cornerstone signing to add top-level experience and physical presence in central defence.

The deal, agreed on Monday, will tie Diop to Portman Road until 2028 if completed as planned. The long-term commitment underlines the club’s strategy of blending seasoned Premier League players with the squad that secured promotion.

Only a year remains on Diop’s current contract at Fulham, a factor that has helped smooth negotiations and lower the fee compared with typical prices for established Premier League defenders.

Fulham stint and Premier League experience

Diop joined Fulham in the summer of 2022 and has since made 96 appearances in all competitions over four seasons with the London club. Last term he featured 13 times in the Premier League, offering dependable cover and competition in Marco Silva’s squad.

Before moving to Craven Cottage, Diop had already built a strong reputation in English football with West Ham United, having previously come through the ranks at Toulouse in France’s Ligue 1.

Ipswich view his accumulated Premier League experience as crucial as they attempt to consolidate their status in the top division after returning to the league.

From France youth teams to Morocco’s World Cup squad

Born in France, Diop represented the country at various youth levels, progressing through its age-group national sides. He later chose to switch allegiance to Morocco at senior level.

He has since become part of the Atlas Lions set-up and was involved in the 2026 World Cup finals, adding major tournament exposure to his resume.

That international pedigree is a key attraction for Ipswich, who are targeting players accustomed to high-pressure environments and elite opposition.

Ipswich’s Premier League preparations

Back in the Premier League after a lengthy absence, Ipswich are eager to ensure their squad is equipped for the challenges ahead. Strengthening the defence has been identified as a priority, with the club hoping Diop’s height, aerial ability and reading of the game will provide immediate benefits.

The move for Diop continues what has been a decisive summer window at Portman Road, as Ipswich seek to build a team capable not just of survival but of establishing themselves in the division.

Final confirmation of the transfer is expected once the medical is completed and paperwork is finalised, with the club hopeful Diop will be available for the start of the new campaign.
