Lesley Ugochukwu: Ex-Chelsea midfielder starts process to switch allegiance from France to Nigeria

Lesley Ugochukwu has begun formal steps to represent Nigeria at international level, in a move that could hand Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle a powerful new midfield option.

The 22-year-old former Chelsea midfielder, who has played for France at youth level, is reported to have started the process of obtaining a Nigerian passport – the first administrative hurdle before applying to FIFA for a change of national association.

Ugochukwu was born in France to Nigerian parents and has been capped by France at under-age level, but he has never made a competitive senior appearance for Les Bleus, leaving the door open for a switch under FIFA regulations.

Passport move opens Super Eagles door

Reports in Nigeria indicate that Ugochukwu has already initiated paperwork to secure his Nigerian passport, which would formally confirm his eligibility as a Nigerian national.

Once that document is issued, the next step would be for the midfielder to submit a one-time switch request to FIFA, allowing him to turn out for the three-time African champions.

Under current FIFA rules, players with dual nationality who have not played a competitive senior match for one country can opt to represent another, even if they have appeared at youth level.

For Nigeria, it would be the latest in a series of high-profile dual-nationality recruitments, adding further depth to an already competitive midfield pool.

Summer visit fuels speculation

Signs of Ugochukwu’s interest in Nigeria emerged earlier in the summer when he travelled to the country and was seen playing football in Owerri alongside Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho.

That visit, coupled with his current lack of senior opportunities with France, has intensified speculation that the Rennes academy graduate is ready to commit his international future to the country of his parents.

Now, with the passport process reportedly under way, the prospect of him lining up in green and white appears increasingly realistic.

Tactical boost for Eric Chelle

Ugochukwu’s profile suggests he could slot naturally into Chelle’s preferred system. Although primarily a defensive midfielder, he is regarded as more of a box-to-box presence, combining physical strength with composure in possession.

He is considered a solid ball-carrier with a high work rate – attributes seen as crucial for the intensity and pressing demands of Chelle’s approach. His ability to cover ground, break up play and contribute in transition could offer Nigeria additional balance in the centre of the pitch.

Analysts believe his arrival would not only deepen Nigeria’s midfield options but also create stronger competition for places, potentially raising overall performance levels. Ugochukwu is also known to chip in with the occasional goal, adding another dimension from midfield.

At club level, Ugochukwu has just completed a loan move from Burnley to Turkish giants Galatasaray, where he will be aiming to showcase the form that first brought him to prominence at Rennes and later earned him a transfer to Chelsea.

A strong season in Istanbul could strengthen his case for immediate inclusion in the Super Eagles squad, should his nationality switch be approved in time for upcoming international windows.
