Nigeria Women Football League move Premiership matches for Eid-El-Fitr festivities
By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has announced the rescheduling of Matchweek 13 and 14 games in light of the Islamic Eid-El-Fitr celebration marking the end of Ramadan fasting.
In a released statement, the NWFL confirmed the postponement, citing the significance of the Eid festivities. Modupe Shabi, the league’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), emphasized the importance of accommodating religious holidays, ensuring that players, officials, and fans can fully participate in these events.
“We value the observance of religious holidays and seek to ensure that both players, officials, and fans can fully participate in this significant event,” Shabi stated. She expressed gratitude to all clubs, stakeholders, and fans for their cooperation and understanding regarding the rescheduling.
The rescheduling was deemed necessary as Matchweek 14, originally scheduled for April 10, coincides with the Eid celebrations. With two games remaining in the 2023/2024 NWFL Premiership regular season, adjustments were made to ensure a smooth conclusion to the campaign.
Currently, Nasarawa Amazons lead Group A with 23 points after 12 games, securing their place at the season-ending Super Six. Heartland Queens and Confluence Queens closely follow in second and third place, respectively, with 21 points each.
In Group B, Rivers Angels top the group with 24 points, followed by Bayelsa Queens and Edo Queens with 22 and 19 points, respectively.
The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six stage, with the league winner earning a spot at the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League Qualifiers.
Success at the WAFU-B Qualifiers could lead to participation in the CAF Women’s Champions League, underscoring the high stakes of the ongoing NWFL Premiership.
