Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 qualification could hinge on March, not Tanzania

Nigeria’s two meetings with Tanzania in November are crucial to keeping their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign alive, but the decisive fixtures in Group L may come four months later.
Tanzania are co-hosts of the finals and have already qualified automatically. As a result, only one qualification place remains in Group L, with Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar competing to finish highest among the remaining teams.
Nigeria are currently second, three points behind leaders Guinea-Bissau after two matches, according to Legit.ng’s mid-October report on the group standings.
If two or more teams finish level on points, the first tie-breaker is the results between the teams involved. Overall goal difference across the group is considered next, followed by total goals scored.
November opportunity, March pressure
The Super Eagles will face Tanzania twice during the November international window. Their final two Group L matches will come in the March 2027 window, away to Madagascar and at home to Guinea-Bissau, according to Naijasabi.
That schedule means the November results alone cannot settle Nigeria’s position in the group. Regardless of what happens in the matches in Uyo and Dar es Salaam, the Super Eagles will still have to deal with their two main qualification rivals.
Two victories against Tanzania would take Nigeria to nine points. However, those results would not alter the head-to-head record against Madagascar or Guinea-Bissau, which would be examined before overall goal difference if the teams finish level.
The home meeting with Guinea-Bissau in March therefore appears the most likely pivotal fixture if the qualification race remains close. Nigeria cannot determine how Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau perform against each other, but they can ensure they take maximum points from their own November matches.
The results against Tanzania could give the Super Eagles the platform they need, but their final position is likely to depend on how they perform when the remaining places in the group are decided.
Nigeria’s immediate task is straightforward: win both November games and remain within reach of the qualification place before the March fixtures.
