Philip Otele Excited to Be Part of Super Eagles Squad for Unity Cup

Hamburg winger Philip Otele has expressed his excitement after being included in Nigeria’s senior men’s national team squad for the 2026 Unity Cup.
The Basel-owned forward earned a place in Eric Chelle’s team despite limited playing opportunities at Hamburg since the March international break.
Otele made his senior debut for Nigeria in the Super Eagles’ 2-2 draw against Jordan on March 31, coming off the bench to replace Frank Onyeka.
The 27-year-old, who was among the first players to arrive in camp, said he has enjoyed every moment with the national team and remains grateful for the opportunity to represent Nigeria.
“It has been very good. I’m really grateful for this opportunity,” Otele told Proudly Austin.
“The coaching staff, the players, everyone has been so welcoming. I am really proud to be with this team.”
Reflecting on his debut appearance, Otele revealed that he closely studied Eric Chelle’s tactical system and believes it suits his style of play.
“I saw the way the boys played, the system,” he said.
“It is a type of system that fits my playing style, and I just got to understand how we play better and try to learn from it.”
The former CFR Cluj winger also highlighted the qualities he hopes to bring to the Super Eagles attack, describing himself as a versatile forward capable of contributing in different ways.
“The way I play is kind of dynamic. I can go in behind with pace. I can link up play as well,” he explained.
“I can finish, I can cross, assist. It’s a little bit of everything, so I can bring this dynamic nature.”
Otele also praised the hunger and determination shown by the home-based players currently in camp.
“It is good. You can see everyone is hungry. They are hungry to take the next step to join the team,” he added.
“They are motivated, so it has been good to train with them.”
Speaking on Nigeria’s ambitions at the Unity Cup, the winger made it clear that the Super Eagles are aiming for the title.
“Of course, that’s why we are in the tournament, we want to win,” he stated.
Otele will now hope to earn his second cap for Nigeria when the Super Eagles face Zimbabwe at The Valley on Tuesday, May 26.
