Shooting Stars beat Ranchers Bees to end five-match winless run

Shooting Stars ended a run of five league matches without victory with a 3-1 win over Ranchers Bees at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
Desmond Ojietefian and Damilola Akinola scored before substitute Qamar Adegoke completed the victory in the 71st minute, giving the Oluyole Warriors all three points in their Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 9 fixture.
The result eased pressure on head coach Salisu Yusuf after a difficult spell for his side. Shooting Stars had drawn their previous two home matches goalless before losing away to Enyimba, Warri Wolves and Kun Khalifat.
Shooting Stars made a positive start and went ahead after 14 minutes. Defender Ojietefian met a long throw from Issa Yusuf with a header that found the net.
Ranchers Bees recovered from the setback and equalised in the 38th minute. Isah Ndala Aliyu converted from a free-kick situation to bring the visitors level.
The hosts continued to threaten from set pieces and with deliveries into the Ranchers Bees penalty area. Their pressure was rewarded in first-half stoppage time when the visitors failed to clear another long throw from Issa Yusuf.
Akinola reacted quickest to the loose ball and finished in the 45th+3 minute to put Shooting Stars back in front. The home side led 2-1 at the interval.
Shooting Stars were awarded a penalty soon after the restart after Ibrahim Inuwa was penalised for handball inside the area. However, Sodiq Ibrahim was denied from the spot by Ranchers Bees goalkeeper Alhassan Tofa.
The save kept Ranchers Bees in contention, but Shooting Stars continued to push for a third goal.
Adegoke, who had replaced Akinola seven minutes earlier, provided it in the 71st minute. He beat his marker before finishing from a tight angle to extend the hosts’ advantage to 3-1.
Ranchers Bees tried to respond, but Shooting Stars controlled the closing stages to secure their first league win in six matches. Their two goals around half-time exposed the visitors’ difficulties in defending set-piece situations.
The victory moves Shooting Stars up to 12th in the table on 11 points from nine matches. Ranchers Bees remain 17th with eight points.
Shooting Stars will visit Ikorodu City on 25 October, while Ranchers Bees are scheduled to host Doma United on the same date.
