Nigeria International duo Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella made history as Bayer Leverkusen was crowned champions of the Bundesliga for the first time.
Leverkusen officially ended Bayern Munich’s reign of 11 years, beating Werder Bremen 5-1 to lift the Meisterchale in front of their home fans at the BayArena.
Xabi Alonso-led team asserted their dominance from the onset, with Nathan Tella’s incisive play setting the tone. The Super Eagles’ pinpoint delivery found Piero Hincapié, whose effort was denied by a stellar save from Michael Zetterer.
The breakthrough came soon after, courtesy of Victor Boniface’s emphatic penalty, sending the home crowd into raptures maintaining the the slim lead into halftime.
Once again, Boniface charged forward and turned the provider as Granit Xhaka unleashed a thunderous strike from distance to double their lead with fans anticipating celebration to clinch their maiden Bundesliga title.
The 23-year-old has been a revelation in his rookie season at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. He has scooped several Rookie of the Month and Player of the Month awards in the Bundesliga.
Super substitution, Florian Wirtz then became the first player to score a Bundesliga hat-trick off the bench since Erling Haaland vs Augsburg in January 2020.
Leverkusen’s triumph not only ended Bayern Munich’s reign but could finish the season invisible.
The team’s resilience has been phenomenal. They’ve dropped points only four times throughout the season and remain undefeated across all competitions.
Boniface and Tella will cherish the memories, with the former capping a brilliant debut season with a Bundesliga title.
