Bayer Leverkusen’s Head Coach, Xabi Alonso, has offered insights into the anticipated return of Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface, who has been sidelined due to injury.

Boniface sustained an injury to his abductor during preparations for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament and has been undergoing rehabilitation since then.

While originally slated for a return to action in April by Leverkusen’s medical team, Alonso has provided a more optimistic outlook, suggesting that Boniface could be available for selection by the end of March.

Leverkusen is keen to integrate the talented striker back into the squad as soon as possible.

“He’s not ready yet, but next week we have an international break and we’ll use the time to take a step forward with him,” Alonso explained in an interview with the club’s website.

“Maybe for Hoffenheim if everything goes well, but we’ll see. We need to have a bit more patience but he’s close to getting back on the pitch.”

Boniface has been a standout performer for Leverkusen since his arrival from Belgian side Royal Union Saint Gilloise, tallying an impressive record of 16 goals and eight assists in 23 games across all competitions.

His imminent return is eagerly anticipated by both fans and the coaching staff.

Currently leading the Bundesliga table with a comfortable 10-point margin over Bayern Munich, Leverkusen is poised for a historic title push with nine games remaining in the season.

Additionally, the team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Europa League and the final four of the German Cup, further underscoring their potential for success under Alonso’s leadership.
