By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The 2023 edition of the Ifeanyi Chiejine Memorial Cup (ICMC) kick-off date has been confirmed for December 11, according to the organisers of the competition.

The second edition of the tournament is billed to run from December 11 to 17 when the final match will take place.

Organised in rememberance and immortalisation of former Nigeria forward, Ifeanyi Chiejine, the ICMC will be held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, the capital of Delta State for the second time in row.

Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship side, Prince Kazeem Eletu Queens defeated fellow second-tier rivals, Imo Strikers 2-0 to win the maiden ICM title last year (2022).

The competition is expected to feature teams in the second and tier NWFL Championship and Nationwide teams participate as well as grassroots women’s football teams.

Chiejine last played for SSVSM-Kairat Almaty in the Kazakhstani Championship before her demise on August 21, 2019, at the age of 36. She had also shone for FC Indiana in the United States of America U(SA’s) W-League, KMF Kuopio, and PK-35 Vantaa in Finland and Zvezda Perm in Russia.

Chiejine previously held the record for the youngest player at the FIFA Women’s World Cup before South Korean youngster, Casey Phair broke the jinx at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
