Bonfere Jo Backs Emmanuel Amuneke for vacant Super Eagles coaching role

By Wale Mustapha

Former Head Coach of Nigeria, Bonfere Jo, has thrown his weight behind Emmanuel Amuneke as the ideal candidate to lead the national team if the choice is for a local coach.

Jo, who guided Nigeria to Olympic gold in 1996, believes that Amuneke possesses the necessary qualifications to manage the three-time African Cup of Nations winners.

The endorsement comes at a time when the Super Eagles are in search of a new coach following the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract.

Peseiro, who helmed the team for 22 months, saw his contract not renewed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after guiding the team to a second-place finish at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Amuneke, who is among the top contenders for the position, has confirmed his application for the role, prompting Jo to endorse him as the best local coach for the Super Eagles.

“Yes, I agree Nigeria needs a local coach at the moment. Not a foreigner,” Jo stated in an interview with Voice of Nigeria.
“But the country will have everything to gain if the authorities should appoint Emmanuel Amuneke for the job. I know him very well.
“He has a very strong mentality. He has the discipline and technical savvy to achieve results. In fact, if the Federation calls me to provide technical backup to Amuneke, I will gladly accept the task.”
Jo lauded Amuneke’s strong mentality, discipline, and technical acumen, expressing his readiness to provide technical support to Amuneke if called upon by the Federation.
