Sevilla FC announces departure of Toni Payne after six seasons

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Spanish top-flight side Sevilla FC has announced that forward Toni Payne has left the club following the end of her contract for the 2023/2024 season.

The announcement was made on the club’s social media pages on Thursday.

Payne, who joined Sevilla in 2018 from Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam, has spent six successful seasons with the team. In her debut season, she made a notable impact, scoring seven goals in 27 league games.

The 2023/2024 season proved to be her most productive in terms of goal contributions, with six goals and four assists in 30 games.

An integral member of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s national team, Payne played a key role in the team that reached the semi-finals of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, securing Nigeria’s qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

During the World Cup, Payne helped Nigeria advance to the Round of 16 in a challenging group that included Canada, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.

With her contract now concluded, Payne is a free agent and is open to negotiating with other clubs ahead of the 2024/2025 season.
