Julius Aghahowa highlights Super Eagles lacks after poor World Cup qualifiers run

Julius Aghahowa, former Nigeria international, has pointed out a critical deficiency in the Super Eagles squad, emphasizing the need for off-ball attackers to enhance the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Aghahowa’s comments follow Nigeria’s disappointing performances in recent World Cup qualifiers, which culminated in the resignation of head coach Finidi George after just 47 days in charge.
Speaking to Brila FM, Aghahowa highlighted the lack of forwards making penetrating runs behind the opposition’s defense as a significant issue.
“Everyone wants the ball at their feet. But no one is making those runs,” he emphasized.
“We need strikers who can always make those runs behind defenders. And we also need players who can spot those runs and deliver a pass.”
His observations underscore the tactical and positional awareness needed to break down defenses effectively, suggesting that the Super Eagles should focus on developing or recruiting players who excel in making off-ball movements to create scoring opportunities.
As Nigeria’s football authorities continue their search for a new foreign technical adviser, Aghahowa’s insights reflect a call for strategic improvements in player roles and team dynamics to bolster Nigeria’s campaign for World Cup qualification.
