Falconets Eye 12th Straight FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Appearance

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, are on the brink of securing yet another appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup as they prepare to face Malawi in the decisive second leg of their final qualifying round clash on Saturday in Lilongwe.
The Falconets have maintained an impressive record of featuring in every edition of the global tournament since its inception in 2002. Nigeria participated in the first two editions held in Canada and Thailand when the competition was organized as an U-19 championship, before it transitioned to an U-20 tournament ahead of the 2006 finals in Russia.
Since then, the Nigerian side has remained a constant presence at the tournament, competing in Chile 2008, Germany 2010, Japan 2012, Canada 2014, Papua New Guinea 2016, France 2018, Costa Rica 2022 and Colombia 2024.
With the 2026 edition set for Poland, the Falconets are determined to continue their remarkable streak. The team boasts an impressive history in the competition, finishing as runners-up in Germany 2010 and Canada 2014, while also reaching the semi-finals in Japan 2012.
Nigeria head into Saturday’s encounter with a comfortable 2-0 lead secured from the first leg played in Ikenne-Remo last weekend. The team arrived in Lilongwe on Wednesday ahead of the crucial tie at the Bingu National Stadium.
Head coach Moses Aduku has expressed confidence in his players’ readiness to complete the qualification task.
“We are here to play and to win. The players understand the importance of this match, and we are fully prepared mentally, tactically, and physically for the challenge ahead,” Aduku said during Friday’s pre-match press conference.
According to the coaching crew, preparations have focused on improving the team’s efficiency in front of goal and maintaining concentration throughout the match. Training sessions have also emphasized attacking coordination and defensive solidity ahead of the decisive fixture.
The match is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, with kickoff set for 3:00pm Malawi time, which corresponds to 2:00pm in Nigeria.
The Falconets reached the final qualifying round after dominant aggregate victories over Rwanda and Senegal. Rwanda were beaten 5-0 on aggregate, while Senegal fell 3-1 over two legs.
Elsewhere in the African qualifiers, Ghana travel to Kampala to face Uganda after edging the first leg 2-1 in Accra, while Cameroon carry a 3-1 advantage into their return fixture against Tanzania in Dar es Salaam.
Benin Republic will also be confident of progressing when they host Côte d’Ivoire after securing a 1-1 draw away in Abidjan during the first leg.
