2025 Afconq: 11 journalists kidnapped on way to Uyo, 6 rescued, one feared dead

A DStv Media Broadcasting (SuperSport) crew, en route to cover the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Nigeria and Libya in Uyo, was attacked and kidnapped by armed assailants on Thursday, NigeriaFootball understands.

Sources informed that the TV Production crew made up Afrosports and DSTV freelancers were ambushed while mostly traveling from Lagos to Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, where the highly anticipated match is scheduled for Friday, October 11.

In the tragic incident, one crew member was fatally shot, while several others were abducted.

The abduction occurred as the journalists were making their way to the event, and police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident but stated he had no information regarding the rescue of any of the remaining victims at that time.

“We intercepted the information as it was being shared on various social media platforms yesterday, and we went to work immediately,” Ikenga said in a statement.

As I speak to you, a joint operation is ongoing. Joint security forces have successfully rescued six members of the media crew who were abducted while travelling from Lagos to Uyo along Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala.

“Meanwhile, operations are still ongoing for the possible rescue of the seventh crew member.”

The attack occurred just hours before the crucial match, and other sources claim the Nigerian military launched a swift and coordinated rescue operation, successfully freeing six of the kidnapped individuals. All rescued personnel are reportedly said to be in stable condition, although understandably shaken by the harrowing experience.

Authorities are continuing to work to ensure the safety of all involved, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing. The attack has cast a pall over the upcoming match, as the nation comes together to support the victims and their families.
