NPFL Slams Illegal Top Scorer Award, Reports Organisers to FCCPC

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has strongly condemned what it described as the unauthorized use of its brand in the recently announced Eunicell Boot Award for the league’s top scorer, Anas Yusuf.

In a firm statement, NPFL Chairman Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye criticized the organizers for failing to follow due process in engaging with the league before publicizing the award.

While acknowledging the positive gesture of the N3.6 million prize, Elegbeleye maintained that any partnership or sponsorship involving the NPFL must go through official channels.

“It is not right for any persons or organisations to use the name of the NPFL and announce an award without recourse to the asset owners,” he said.

“We are going to use every legal channel to protect our asset from this ambush.”

Elegbeleye revealed that the NPFL would be petitioning the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to curb what he termed “illegal activities” by rogue sponsors and collaborators.

Warning the organizers to desist immediately, he added, “There must come a time when we must put a stop to impunity. This is the time, and we must get things right.”
