The Nasarawa State Government has announced plans to comprehensively upgrade the Lafia City Stadium in preparation for the upcoming 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, set to kick off on August 22nd, 2025.
This initiative follows a directive issued by the NPFL Board on June 3rd, 2025, mandating participating clubs to ensure their home grounds meet required league standards. The required upgrades include installation of LED floodlights, alternative power supply systems, standard playing turfs, perimeter fencing, emergency routes, and renovated changing rooms.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, led a delegation of government officials and technical experts on an inspection tour of the stadium on Monday. He assured that Governor Abdullahi Sule’s administration is fully committed to completing the necessary renovations ahead of the new season.
“We won’t be complacent anymore. We have to act fast and put this place in the best condition before the league’s inspection team visits,” Yakubu emphasized.
He added that in addition to the league requirements, the stadium will also receive athletic tartan tracks and a digital scoreboard, in time to host the annual Gusau/Ahlan Cup Preseason Football Tournament.
Nasarawa United FC Chairman, Solomon Babanjah, expressed gratitude for the swift action, saying it will boost team morale and performance.
Present during the inspection were Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ahmad Yusuf, Director of Facilities and Stadia Management, Salisu Galadima ‘Basira’, Chairman of the State Football Association, among others.
Nasarawa United finished 12th in the 2024/25 NPFL season, with striker Anas Yusuf clinching the league’s top scorer title with 18 goals.
