Gift Monday targets Super Falcons return after U.S. resurgence

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
After missing out on the last African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Morocco, forward Gift Monday has set her sights on a return to the Nigeria’s senior women’s national team.
The U.S.-based striker, who was a surprise absentee during Nigeria’s triumph in Morocco last July, has rediscovered her form in the United States — fueling optimism about a national team comeback.
“Playing for the Super Falcons is a very big honour for me, and I am more than happy to wear the jersey,” Gift said after Sunday’s victory with her club side.
“I’m just doing what I can to get my act together and hope I get called up. I’m preparing for what is ahead of me.”
Her recent performances have caught the eye, and her resurgence is seen as a timely boost as Nigeria begins preparations for upcoming international fixtures.
She scored three goals to lead Washington Spirit to a 4-0 win over Houston Dash on Sunday.
The treble which came in the first half was the fastest in the NWSL and first at the Audi Field.
With eight goals, Monday is the fourth highest goal scorer in the NWSL this season.
