AFCON 2025: Garba Lawal Defends Zaidu Sanusi After Criticism Over Tanzania Win
Former Nigeria international Garba Lawal has come out strongly in defence of Super Eagles left-back Zaidu Sanusi following criticism from sections of the media and fans after Nigeria’s opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Sanusi played the full 90 minutes as Nigeria kicked off their AFCON campaign with a nervy 2-1 victory over Tanzania’s Taifa Stars on Tuesday. Despite the win, the Super Eagles showed moments of defensive vulnerability, with the FC Porto defender singled out for criticism and handed low ratings by some football platforms.
However, speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, Lawal described the backlash against Sanusi as excessive and unfair.
“Why are they criticizing him? Is he the only player on the pitch, or was he solely at fault for the Tanzania equalizer?” Lawal said.
“I don’t understand why one player is being singled out for criticism when football is a team sport. They are not the coach—only the coach knows why he selected him.”
Lawal pointed to Sanusi’s pedigree at club level as evidence of his quality, stressing that consistent selection at a top European side should command respect.
“If he’s not good enough, why is he playing for FC Porto? He has been at Porto for almost five seasons, yet Nigerian fans are still complaining. The coach knows his quality, which is why he continues to use him,” he added.
“He can run, tackle, defend, and contribute in attack—so what more do they want? The boy deserves some respect. He is playing for the nation.”
Nigeria had taken the lead through Semi Ajayi, before Tanzania responded minutes later to level the score. Ademola Lookman eventually sealed the win for the Super Eagles with a powerful left-footed strike from outside the box.
Lawal also praised the team’s resilience against what he described as a dangerous Tanzanian side.
“It’s a fantastic start, and in every tournament, winning the first game is very important. The result brings some relief and reduces the pressure,” he said.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to a highly anticipated clash against Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles on 27 December, with both teams coming into the match on the back of opening wins.
“That’s a good thing, especially with the next match coming up against Tunisia, who also defeated Uganda,” Lawal concluded.
“I know it’s going to be tough, but the players must remain focused.”
Nigeria will be hoping to build on their opening victory as they continue their quest for a fourth AFCON title.
