Super Eagles Pocket ,000 in Goals Bonus as AFCON 2025 Scoring Run Continues

Nigeria’s senior men’s national team are already $25,000 richer at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, thanks to a goals bonus incentive promised to the team.

Under the agreed arrangement, each goal scored earns the team $5,000, and Nigeria have so far registered five goals, translating to $25,000 in bonuses after just two rounds of group matches.

The Super Eagles currently stand as the highest-scoring team at the tournament, underlining a clear shift in approach compared to the previous edition of the competition.

At the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria struggled in front of goal, adopting a largely defensive strategy under former head coach José Peseiro. Goals were scarce, but that cautious approach was compensated by a rock-solid defence.

Under new coach Eric Chelle, however, the narrative has changed. The Super Eagles are now playing with greater attacking intent, creating numerous chances and finding the net more freely. In truth, they could have scored even more goals had they been more clinical in front of goal.

That attacking improvement has come with a trade-off. Unlike the 2023 squad that built its success on defensive solidity, the current team is yet to keep a clean sheet in Morocco, conceding three goals in two matches. Notably, the same goalkeeper from last year’s tournament, Stanley Nwabali, remains between the posts.

As Nigeria continue their AFCON campaign, the challenge for Chelle will be to strike the right balance between the new-found attacking flair and the defensive discipline that previously served the Super Eagles so well.
