Chinaza Uchendu Shines as Melbourne City Clinch Fifth A-League Title

Melbourne City lifted the Ninja A-League trophy for the fifth time in club history on Saturday night, securing a thrilling 3-1 victory over Wellington Phoenix at a packed AAMI Park—thanks in no small part to Chinaza Uchendu’s commanding performance.

Uchendu, a standout presence in City’s midfield, orchestrated play from start to finish, linking attack and defence seamlessly and providing the creative spark that set the tone for the championship-winning display.

Holly McNamara scored a first-half double to put City in control, before Leticia McKenna’s stunning long-range strike early in the second half extended the lead and electrified the home crowd. Wellington responded through Makala Woods, but City’s composure and Uchendu’s steady influence helped see out the victory, completing a well-earned Premiership-Championship double.

Coach Michael Matricciani fielded the same starting XI that had earned City their spot in the Grand Final, keeping faith with the side’s winning formula. The only change to the matchday squad was the return of Danella Butrus from concussion, who took a place on the bench.

City started the game strongly, immediately testing Wellington’s defence. Uchendu’s calm presence in midfield allowed Bryleeh Henry and Aideen Keane to exploit the wings with pace and precision. Despite a denied penalty call early on, City maintained relentless pressure, with Leah Davidson and McKenna coming close to scoring before the breakthrough.

The opening goal finally arrived in the 41st minute, with McNamara curling a sublime strike into the top corner. Just two minutes later, she doubled the lead after a perfectly weighted pass from Shelby McMahon, sending City into halftime in control. Throughout this period, Uchendu’s intelligent positioning and decisive passing underpinned City’s dominance, allowing the attacking players to flourish.

The second half began in similar fashion, with Henry and McKenna producing moments of brilliance. McKenna’s spectacular 49th-minute goal pushed the advantage to 3-0, leaving Wellington stunned. The visitors did pull one back through Woods, but City’s defence, marshalled by captain Rebekah Stott and anchored by Uchendu’s midfield discipline, remained resolute to see out the win.

Matricciani introduced Laura Hughes late in the game as City focused on managing the closing stages. Despite Wellington enjoying more possession, City’s structure never wavered, thanks to Uchendu’s calming influence and tireless work rate.

With the A-League double secured, City now shift their focus to continental competition, traveling to South Korea for their AFC Women’s Champions League semi-final clash against Tokyo Verdy Belaza next Wednesday at 3pm AEST.
