Edo Queens Go Top as NWFL Premiership Super Six Title Race Intensifies

The battle for the 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six title took another dramatic twist as Edo Queens surged to the top of the standings following an emphatic victory, while Nasarawa Amazons suffered their first defeat of the playoffs on Wednesday.
With all three Matchday Three fixtures producing significant results, the race for the championship remains wide open heading into the final stages of the competition in Port Harcourt.
Edo Queens delivered a ruthless attacking display to overwhelm Abia Angels 6-2 and claim top spot on the Super Six table.
The Benin City side made an explosive start, with Chioma Moses opening the scoring in the third minute before going on to produce a remarkable four-goal performance. Precious Oscar and Atume Doosuur also got on the scoresheet as Moses Aduku’s team showcased their title credentials with an attacking masterclass.
Abia Angels responded through Mariam Abdulrasheed and Blessing Saleh, but they struggled to contain the relentless pressure from Edo Queens, who remained firmly in control throughout the encounter.
The victory, their second in three playoff matches, moved Edo Queens onto six points and strengthened their bid for a second NWFL crown.
Defending champions Bayelsa Queens also recorded a crucial result, defeating hosts Rivers Angels 2-1 to remain firmly in the championship picture.
Chiamaka Ezekwugo gave the Prosperity Girls the lead just before the half-hour mark with a powerful header. Rivers Angels fought back after the interval and levelled matters in the 58th minute when Abasiofon Uwah converted from the penalty spot.
However, Bayelsa Queens responded quickly, with Dorshima Taarnum restoring their advantage five minutes later. The decisive strike proved enough to secure all three points and keep their title defence alive.
The victory lifted Bayelsa Queens into third place on the table with four points from three matches.
Elsewhere, FC Robo Queens revived their Super Six campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten Nasarawa Amazons.
Having lost their opening two playoff matches, the Lagos-based side produced one of their most disciplined displays of the season. Their persistence was rewarded in the second half when Opeyemi Ajakaye and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi scored within five minutes of each other to hand Robo Queens a vital win.
The result denied Nasarawa Amazons the opportunity to establish a clear lead at the summit and further tightened the championship race.
Wednesday’s outcomes have reshaped the Super Six standings, with Edo Queens now leading the pack while Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, and Rivers Angels remain firmly in contention for the title.
For FC Robo Queens, the victory has reignited hopes of mounting a late challenge, ensuring they remain within striking distance of the leading teams.
With the competition entering its decisive phase, every point will be crucial as the six contenders continue their quest to be crowned champions of Nigerian women’s football.
