Jonathan Okechukwu: Nigerian teenager linked with Red Bull Salzburg move from Plateau United

Jonathan Okechukwu, the Nigerian central midfielder currently at Plateau United, is being linked with a move to Austrian side A. Salzburg in the 2. Liga. The 18-year-old, born in Kano and under contract with the Nigerian Premier Football League club until 30 June 2026, has emerged as a candidate for the Austrian outfit as they assess midfield options ahead of the new campaign.

Okechukwu, a right-footed central midfielder, has established himself as a regular in the NPFL this season, making 33 league appearances and contributing one goal and one assist. He has accumulated 2,593 minutes in the competition, underlining his status as a consistent presence in Plateau United’s midfield despite his age.

Any deal is likely to be shaped by his current valuation of around €75,000, with Salzburg expected to weigh up whether to move now, while he is under contract, or monitor his situation closer to the end of his deal. A transfer to Austria’s second tier would represent his first move to European football.

Okechukwu only joined Plateau United ahead of the 2025–26 season, arriving from Crown FC on 3 August 2025. His quick adaptation to top-flight football in Nigeria and the length of time remaining on his contract mean Plateau United are under no immediate pressure to sell, and there is no suggestion yet that an agreement is close. For now, the midfielder remains tied to Plateau United until mid-2026.
