Bellingham faces possible FIFA action after new footage emerges of clash with Barco

Jude Bellingham could be investigated by FIFA and miss England’s World Cup third-place play-off after new footage appeared to shed light on his post-match confrontation with Argentina’s Valentin Barco in the 2026 semi-final.

The Real Madrid midfielder was seen on television cameras appearing to clip Barco lightly on the head moments after Argentina’s 2-1 victory in New Jersey, sparking a heated exchange that quickly drew in other players.

At the time, the incident seemed to come out of nowhere, with no obvious provocation from the Argentine full-back. But new video circulated online after the match appears to show an earlier flashpoint between the pair that may have fuelled Bellingham’s reaction, according to the Sun.

Celebration flashpoint after Argentina equaliser

The footage focuses on Argentina’s dramatic equaliser in the 85th minute, scored by Enzo Fernandez. As the ball hit the net, several Argentina substitutes raced onto the pitch to celebrate.

Among them was Barco, who did not join the group around Fernandez. Instead, he sprinted directly towards the cluster of England players.

Barco then leapt in front of the England team in an exuberant celebration that appeared to inflame tensions. His actions prompted an immediate response from defender John Stones, who forcefully shoved the Argentine away from the group, sending him back towards the technical area and the substitutes’ bench.

The confrontation was not punished at the time and the game continued, but the scene may have lingered in Bellingham’s mind as England’s World Cup hopes slipped away late on.

Post-match clash caught on camera

When the final whistle sounded to confirm Argentina’s 2-1 win and England’s elimination, Bellingham walked towards Barco.

Broadcast cameras showed the 21-year-old making what appeared to be a light, brushing blow to the back or side of Barco’s head. The Argentine reacted immediately, spinning round to confront Bellingham and exchanging words with him.

Veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi quickly stepped in to support his team-mate and helped separate the players as others moved in to diffuse the situation. The altercation did not escalate further on the pitch.

Match officials did not appear to witness the incident, and no cards were shown in its aftermath.

FIFA could review incident

Although the referee and his assistants missed the clash, reports suggest world governing body FIFA is likely to review the television footage and the additional clips circulating on social media.

Under FIFA regulations, players can face retrospective disciplinary action if video replays reveal violent conduct or serious unsporting behaviour that went unpunished during the match.

If FIFA’s disciplinary panel decides to open a case and subsequently sanction Bellingham, the England midfielder could be suspended for the third-place play-off against France, scheduled for Saturday.

Barco attracting Premier League interest

Valentin Barco is already a familiar name to many followers of English football.

The 19-year-old made seven first-team appearances for Brighton in the Premier League before moving to Strasbourg in France last season, where he has impressed both as a left-back and in a more advanced midfield role.

His performances in Ligue 1 have reportedly attracted strong interest from Chelsea, with several reports suggesting he is a candidate to join the London club in the current summer transfer window, although no deal has been officially announced.

The emerging footage from the World Cup semi-final has now thrust Barco further into the spotlight, as FIFA deliberates whether Bellingham’s reaction to the young defender’s earlier celebrations warrants formal punishment.
