Walker says England no better under Tuchel than Southgate after World Cup exit

England’s former defender Kyle Walker has claimed there is “not a big difference” between Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate as national team managers, after the Three Lions’ agonising World Cup 2026 semi-final defeat to Argentina.

England were beaten 2-1 in New York on Wednesday, conceding twice in the final minutes to crash out of the tournament at the last-four stage. They will now face France in the third-place play-off in the early hours of Sunday.

Tuchel, appointed to replace Southgate with the explicit brief of turning near-misses into trophies, has come under fierce scrutiny following the late collapse.

Late Argentine comeback stuns England

England had appeared to be on course for their first World Cup final since 1966 when Anthony Gordon put them ahead in the 55th minute.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina struggled to break down a disciplined England side and were staring at a 1-0 defeat heading into the closing stages. But Enzo Fernandez levelled in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martinez struck in stoppage time (90+2) to complete a dramatic turnaround.

Tuchel’s tactics quickly became the focus of criticism. England dropped deeper for more than half an hour, and the German coach opted for a series of defensive substitutions. Despite reinforcing the back line, England conceded twice, extinguishing hopes of a historic final appearance.

‘I don’t see a big difference’ – Walker

Walker, now at Burnley and formerly of Manchester City, argued that Tuchel has not advanced England beyond the level they reached under his predecessor.

Speaking to The Sun, he said: “تم تعيين توماس توخيل مدربا لمنتخب انجلترا ليقودنا الى الفوز. لكن بصفتي شخصا لعب تحت قيادة جاريث ساوثجيت، لا ارى فرقا كبيرا بين ما فعلناه في كاس العالم هذا عندما كان هو المسوول”.

The 34-year-old highlighted Southgate’s record in major tournaments.

He added: “اوصلنا جاريث الى نصف نهايي المونديال (عام 2018)، والى نهاييين في بطولة اوروبا.. لعل الناس الان سيقدرون ما فعله ومدى صعوبة تجاوز هذا الخط في اي منافسة”.

‘Same story for ten years’

Walker said England’s latest exit continues a familiar pattern of falling just short on the biggest stage.

وتابع لاعب بيرنلي الحالي: “انها نفس القصة التي مررت بها طوال السنوات العشر الماضية من مسيرتي المهنية. هناك دايما احتمالات وشكوك عندما تلعب مع منتخب انجلترا. ما زلنا ننافس، لكن المنافسة ليست كافية”.

He insisted he was not angry with the players, but understood the public’s frustration.

واشار في تصريحاته: “لا اريد ان اقول انني غاضب لانني اعرف ما قدمه اللاعبون وما ضحوا به ليكونوا هناك.لكنني اتفهم، من وجهة نظر احد المعجبين، خيبة الامل مرة اخرى”.

وواصل: “لقد بذل اللاعبون قصارى جهدهم، وبذلوا كل ما في وسعهم، وبذلوا كل ما في وسعهم لضمان حصولنا على فرصة. كنا على وشك تحقيق ذلك. لقد اقتربنا هذه المرة اكثر مما كنا عليه في كاس العالم الماضية. لكننا ما زلنا لم ننجح”.

Injuries and selection headaches

Walker also pointed to fitness problems among key players as a major complication for Tuchel at the tournament.

واردف: “من الصعب جدا على المدرب اختيار تشكيلة الفريق عندما يلعب افضل لاعبيه معظم المباريات ويعانون من الاصابات”.

واستدرك: “لم نر افضل نسخة من بوكايو ساكا، او ربما ديكلان رايس الى حد ما. كما ان جون ستونز لم يلعب سوى عدد قليل من المباريات، وريس جيمس لم يشارك كثيرا في البطولة”.

وتابع تصريحاته: “لقد واجهنا صعوبة في تحديد من سيلعب ومن لن يلعب في مركز الظهير الايسر ومن سيغيب”.

Tuchel’s future and the search for an English coach

Tuchel is contracted to remain in charge through to the next European Championship, and Walker believes the German should be given the chance to lead England into that tournament.

Asked whether England should look to replace Tuchel with a home-grown manager, Walker questioned whether any English coach currently matches the former Chelsea manager’s credentials.

وعن امكانية رحيل توخيل والتعاقد مع مدرب جديد قال: “هل يمكننا منحها لمدرب انجليزي، ولكن هل يوجد اي مدرب بمستوى توماس توخيل؟ على الارجح لا”.

وواصل: “لكي تصبح مدربا لمنتخب انجلترا، عليك ان تدرب احد المنتخبات الستة الاولى وان تنافس في دوري ابطال اوروبا وتفوز بالالقاب”.

واضاف: “احد الاسماء التي لفتت انتباهي هو ايدي هاو، لكن هل يمتلك السيرة الذاتية التي توهله لتدريب منتخب انجلترا؟ على الارجح لا”.

واتم تصريحاته: “لذا لا اعتقد ان الوقت قد حان للبدء في تغيير المدربين بعد انتهاء البطولة”.

England’s immediate focus now turns to securing third place against France, but the debate over Tuchel’s tenure – and whether the country truly moved on from the Southgate era – is likely to continue long after the final whistle.
