Karim Adeyemi completes Barcelona medical ahead of €29m move

Karim Adeyemi is on the brink of becoming Barcelona’s latest summer signing after completing his medical with the club, in a deal worth up to €29m from Borussia Dortmund.
The Germany winger, 24, underwent tests at Barcelona’s hospital on Wednesday and is expected to be officially announced as a new Barca player within days, Spanish media report.
If confirmed, Adeyemi will follow England international Anthony Gordon as the Catalan club’s second major arrival of the current transfer window, as they look to reshape their attack ahead of the new season.
Early-morning medical as move edges closer
According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Adeyemi arrived early at Barcelona’s main medical facility on Wednesday to complete the mandatory health checks required before signing.
The process is understood to have lasted around two hours. After finishing the medical tests, Adeyemi returned to his hotel in the city centre to await further instructions from the club.
He flew into Barcelona on Wednesday lunchtime, with the move now at an advanced stage following weeks of negotiations between the Spanish side and Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund.
Sources cited by the newspaper say there were no issues flagged during the medical examinations, clearing a major hurdle before an official announcement can be made.
Financial details of the deal
Barcelona and Dortmund have already exchanged draft contracts for Adeyemi’s transfer and subsequent signing, with only final formalities still to be completed.
Dortmund are set to receive a guaranteed €22m (£18.5m) fee for the forward, with a further €7m (£5.9m) in performance-related add-ons, taking the total potential value of the deal to €29m (£24.4m).
The structure of the agreement is seen as relatively favourable for Barcelona, who continue to manage their finances carefully under La Liga’s spending rules while still seeking to strengthen key areas of the squad.
Adeyemi, who can operate across the frontline but is primarily used as a winger, is expected to add pace, direct running and pressing intensity to the attacking options at the Olympic Stadium.
Flick reunion on hold until announcement
Despite being in the city, Adeyemi will not visit Barcelona’s training complex or meet head coach Hansi Flick until the transfer is officially confirmed.
Flick is regarded as one of Adeyemi’s strongest backers, having handed him his first appearance for the Germany national team during his time in charge of the national side.
The German coach is also eager for Adeyemi to integrate quickly with his new team-mates, but the club is maintaining its policy of keeping new signings away from full sporting activities until club statements are signed off and published.
Barcelona had initially planned to unveil Adeyemi officially on Thursday, though the club has not ruled out pushing the announcement back to Friday, depending on the speed of the final paperwork.
Presentation delayed by World Cup commitments
While the official confirmation could come this week, Barca fans may have to wait slightly longer to see Adeyemi presented in club colours.
The formal unveiling at the stadium will not take place until next week, once club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco return from the World Cup final in the United States.
They are due to attend Sunday’s showpiece between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, after which they will travel back to Barcelona to oversee Adeyemi’s presentation.
Following the traditional photo session and presentation ceremony, Adeyemi is expected to hold his first press conference as a Barcelona player, where he will outline his ambitions at the club and discuss reuniting with Flick in La Liga.
