Ange Postecoglou accelerates Al Nassr pre-season with early Lisbon camp and five friendlies planned

Al Nassr head coach Ange Postecoglou has ordered an early start to the club’s overseas training camp and a packed schedule of warm-up matches, as the Saudi champions gear up for a demanding season on four fronts.

Early departure to Lisbon

The Riyadh-based club will leave for the Portuguese capital Lisbon on Sunday, several days earlier than originally planned, for an extended pre-season camp that will run until 5 August 2026, according to Saudi newspaper Arriyadiyah.

The decision to move up the trip, taken by the Australian coach and approved by the Al Nassr board, marks the third phase of the club’s preparation programme for the new campaign.

The camp had initially been scheduled to begin on 25 July, but Postecoglou has opted to give his players additional time for both physical and tactical work before competitive fixtures begin.

Five friendlies requested

Arriyadiyah reported that Postecoglou has asked the club’s Portuguese sporting director, Simao Coutinho, to arrange five friendly matches during the Lisbon camp.

The coach wants to use these games to assess every member of the squad, test different tactical systems and measure the players’ fitness levels ahead of the new season.

The series of friendlies is seen as central to Postecoglou’s plan to ensure Al Nassr start the campaign at full throttle, with the club determined to compete strongly for every trophy on offer.

Intensive build-up after domestic phase

Al Nassr returned to Riyadh last Wednesday from the southern city of Abha, where they had been working through an earlier stage of their pre-season schedule.

The squad will continue training in the Saudi capital before flying to Portugal, where the intensity of preparations is expected to increase significantly under Postecoglou’s guidance.

Club officials view the European leg of pre-season as critical to fine-tuning the team’s structure and integrating any tactical changes the Australian intends to introduce.

Targeting trophies on four fronts

Al Nassr, the reigning champions of the Saudi Pro League – known commercially as the Roshn Saudi League – face a congested calendar in the coming campaign.

The club will compete in:

– The Roshn Saudi League
– The King’s Cup (King of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques)
– The Saudi Super Cup
– The AFC Champions League Elite

This workload is placing added emphasis on starting the season in peak condition, with Postecoglou and his staff intent on building depth, sharpness and cohesion across the squad from the outset.

The accelerated camp, extended training window and demanding schedule of friendlies underline Al Nassr’s determination not only to defend their domestic crown but also to establish themselves as a major force in regional competition.

By front-loading their preparations in Lisbon, the Saudi champions hope to lay the foundations for sustained success across all four competitions in what promises to be one of the club’s most intensive seasons in recent years.
