Tobi Akinyimika: Anglo-Nigerian midfielder steps up from Watford U18s to U21s

England and Nigeria youth midfielder Tobi Akinyimika has been promoted from Watford U18 to Watford U21, securing his place in the next tier of the club’s development pathway.

The 18-year-old central midfielder makes the move within the Hornets’ academy structure as he continues his progression through the age groups. It marks a formal step up into the U21 squad, where he will now train and compete against older opposition on a regular basis.

Akinyimika has been part of Watford’s youth ranks at under-18 level, featuring in midfield where he is primarily deployed in a central role. The internal move reflects the club’s decision to elevate him into a group that acts as the closest bridge to senior football.

Watford’s U21 side is typically used to prepare players for first-team contention, with youngsters tested in more physically and tactically demanding matches than at U18 level. Akinyimika’s inclusion in that environment underlines his standing within the club’s youth set-up.

Eligible to represent both England and Nigeria, Akinyimika now enters a stage of his career where regular exposure to under-21 football will be key to his development. His switch from the U18 squad to the U21 group is registered as a completed move for the new campaign.

The central midfielder’s transfer from Watford U18 to Watford U21 is effective from 17 July 2026.
