Atletico Madrid set World Cup final record with nine players in Spain–Argentina showdown

Atletico Madrid will have more players in the 2026 World Cup final than any other club, cementing a historic record as Spain face Argentina in New York.
The Spanish side will see nine contracted players involved across the two finalists’ squads, making the La Liga club the single most represented team in a World Cup final for the third successive tournament.
The achievement, reported by France 24 via Agence France-Presse and confirmed by Atletico on their official website, underlines the depth and global reach of the squad assembled under Argentine coach Diego Simeone.
The club stated it has become “النادي الاكثر تمثيلا للاعبين في نهايي كاس العالم منذ نسخة ايطاليا 1934” – “the club with the most players represented in a World Cup final since the 1934 edition in Italy”.
Nine Atletico players in New York final
Atletico’s presence is split between the Spain and Argentina squads, with several key figures set to start or feature from the bench in the final.
On the Argentina side, six players are under contract with the Madrid club: forward Julian Alvarez, playmaker Thiago Almada, full-back Nahuel Molina, goalkeeper Juan Musso, attacker Giuliano Simeone and midfielder Nico Gonzalez, whose loan from Juventus has now expired.
Spain’s squad includes four players tied to Atletico: midfielder Alex Baena, versatile midfielder Marcos Llorente, defender Marc Pubill and left-back Alejandro Grimaldo. Grimaldo completed his move to the club from Bayer Leverkusen on 30 June, while the World Cup was already in progress.
After accounting for the end of Nico Gonzalez’s loan and confirming Grimaldo’s registration as an Atletico player, the club’s total number of representatives in the final remains at nine.
Historic dominance on World Cup stage
Atletico’s announcement emphasised that this is the third World Cup in a row in which the club has topped the list for final‐match representation, an unprecedented run stretching back through the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
The Madrid side’s influence reflects a recruitment strategy that has targeted established internationals and emerging talent from both Europe and South America, many of whom have gone on to become regulars for their national teams.
The club’s strong Argentinian contingent also highlights the long-term impact of Diego Simeone’s tenure. A former Argentina international himself, Simeone has been in charge at the Metropolitano for more than a decade, shaping a squad known for its intensity, tactical discipline and resilience in major competitions.
Prestige boost ahead of new season
Having nine players involved in the biggest match in world football is likely to enhance Atletico’s standing on the global stage and could increase interest in their squad ahead of the summer transfer window’s final weeks.
It also offers a competitive advantage: several Atletico players will return to Madrid with the experience of playing under extreme pressure in a World Cup final, a factor that can translate into leadership and composure in club competitions.
With Spain and Argentina both chasing glory, Atletico Madrid are guaranteed to have World Cup winners in their dressing room when the new club season begins – reinforcing the club’s status as one of the most influential talent bases in the modern game.
